So I’ve been worried for many years where this is all going.
So much at risk and our leaders appear to want to run us harum-scarum straight into some sort of catastrophe; climatic, military or financial – or any other flavour, combination or sort you can imagine, or is possible.
A while ago – a long time to some but it feels like yesterday to me in some ways – I heard of the concept of sustainable resource use.
There is only so much stuff on Planet Earth, Gaia only has so much to give.
Gaia’s bounty will replenish naturally, at a given rate – so if we use our shared resources at a rate that outstrips that of Gaia’s ability to replenish we will, inevitably, run out one day.
I was taught as a teenager that there are two schools of thought (yes, again kids being taught that the world is full of binary viewpoints) – one is that we’ll end up in a catastrophe, the other is that technology will step in and save us.
But you can’t eat the internet, you can’t grow cabbages in a data centre, and you can’t drink your mobile phone if you are thirsty.
I am in fact terrified that we will run out.
This piece – rudimentary though it may be, rough and ready at best – reflects this fear – or inevitability, if you like.
